The World Prematurity Day, on 17th November

Inequalities in survival rates around the world are significant. In low-income settings, half of the babies born at or below 32 weeks (2 months early) die due to a lack of feasible, cost-effective care, such as warmth, breastfeeding support, and basic care for infections and breathing difficulties.

Children in resource-limited settings are failing to reach their developmental potential due to widespread adversities such as poverty and malnutrition. Children facing additional perinatal risk factors, such as prematurity, low birth weight (LBW), and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), are at greater risk of dying in childhood. Preterm and LBW (PT/LBW) infants who survive are likely to face additional developmental challenges and comorbidities such as respiratory disease, feeding difficulties, and malnutrition.
